Livingston Montana Absoroka

A Recreational Paradise

If you’ve been to the North Entrance to Yellowstone National Park, then you’ve been to the area that surrounds Livingston, Montana. Only about 55 miles from the park and the Roosevelt Arch, this historic Montana cradles the edge of the Yellowstone River, surrounded by majestic mountain ranges on three sides. Boasting a population of nearly 7,000, Livingston has many modern amenities you might find in a larger city, while still maintaining the feel of a truly western Montana town.

Livingston emerged as a trading post, but quickly grew with the arrival of the Northern Pacific railway. Once firmly established, the town that replaced the trading post was originally named ‘Clark City’ after a local railroad contractor. But, the community moved further up the river and renamed itself to Livingston after Johnston Livingston a stockholder and director of the railroad, where it still sits today. It was the original gateway to Yellowstone National Park and headquarters of the railroad back in those days.

Although it is a smaller town, Livingston is rich with famous and infamous personalities throughout history. For 20 years, Livingston was the home of Calamity Jane and it was the destination spot for many members of European royalty who experienced wanderlust. It’s also a prime location for movies and A River Runs Through It, Rancho Deluxe and The Horse Whisperer all filmed scenes in and around the town. Many famous actors live or have lived in the city and it’s a favorite topic of Jimmy Buffett in his music.
