Noxon Montana

Rural Montana Living

Noxon is a small town located in Sanders County. With a population of less than 500 people, the town is nestled in the Coeur d’Alene Mountains and the Bitterroot Range on the western side of Montana. Nearby is the Noxon Rapids Dam, which produces electricity from the moving waters of the Clark Fork River. With the Kootenai National Forest, Noxon is a place of wild beauty with scenic vistas and ample outdoor opportunities.

Like many Montana towns, Noxon went through a boom period as the railroad was being constructed. Along with jobs from the railroad, the residents of Noxon were mining and logging the area. Back then it was also known for trapping and huckleberries – a berry unique to areas of higher elevation. Today the huckleberries still thrive, but the trapping, mining and logging have slowed in this once active town.

Noxon Montana

Even though the industrial aspects of Noxon have dried up, the natural resources in the area have not. Beyond the many trailheads that dot the landscape in the area around Noxon, the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness nearby, contains over 93,000 acres of rugged mountains carved by glaciers over the millennia. Throw in ample access to the Clark Fork River and Noxon quickly becomes a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.

While you’re exploring the area, take some time to stop by the Noxon Reservoir and fish for smallmouth and largemouth bass as well as northern pike. Keep your eyes out for bighorn sheep and mountain lions along the slopes and for elk and moose in the valleys. And, if you’re lucky, maybe you’ll see one of the many bald eagles that call this part of Montana home.
